HOW IT WORKS

On-Duty Peer Support

•Individual(s) in crisis may contact any Peer Team Member for a one-on-one meeting

(Supervisor notification is not required by Individual)

​

•Peer Member WILL notify Captain of "Behavioral Crisis" on arrival

​

•The Captain will call the Battalion Chief to take the truck out of service

​

•Through conversation, it will be determined if the individual feels they can safely remain on duty or need to be relieved for the remainder of the shift

​

•Battalion Chief will be notified if the individual needs to be removed from the schedule (Requires Use of Name for Scheduling)

Off-Duty Peer Support

•Individual(s) in crisis may contact any Peer Team Member for a one-on-one meeting

​

•Through conversation, it will be determined if the individual feels the need for in-patient facility or out-patient referral

​

•For out-patient referral recommend the appropriate Mental Health Clinician/EAP resource

​

•Peer Team Member will contact facility representative (if indicated)

​

•Peer Team Member will contact HR for FMLA Scheduling

CISM

An immediate intervention by On-Duty personnel due to a call of significant priority and/or distress

-Overseen by Treasure Coast CISM-

​

Comprised of (2) two components held in a group setting.

​

1. Diffusing:

      -Immediately Post Incident

      -Informal group meeting

      -Usually at the fire station

      -Handouts with Common Signs/Symptoms

​

2. Debriefing:

       -Formal Group Meeting

       -Mental Health Clinician

       -May be Inter-department (FD, LEO, HOSPITAL, DISPATCH)

       -Usually 48-72 hours Post Incident (Next Shift)

Confidentiality

FL Statute 401.30(4)(e)

     For use in a critical incident stress debriefing.

Any such discussions during a critical incident stress debriefing shall be considered privileged communication under s. 90.503;

​

Confidentiality is an integral component of every Peer Support/CISM Team. It protects buy-in and security of frontline personnel, and maintains

PEER Team integrity. 

ANY communication will be absent of detail and for scheduling/FMLA purposes when necessary.

​

PEER Support Team Members will ALWAYS maintain a Duty to Act if:

1. You are a danger to yourself or others

2. There is any signs or indications of abuse of any kind
